21 mar 1992

For historical and religious importance, the Church of Santa Fosca is preponderant in Val Fiorentina: it is the oldest religious aggregation center in the valley, even if the exact date of foundation is not known, the church is mentioned for the first time in an official document from 1286. Over the course of its history it has undergone substantial changes: in 1421 it was heavily renovated as it was in a state of abandonment; in the two-year period between 1454 and 1456 the bell tower was added, which was then raised to its current level in 1762 and underwent another important restoration in the same period. The structure is small and compact, with clear Gothic-Alpine influences. Frontally, the Church of Santa Fosca has a very particular pointed arch at the entrance, a rose window and two famous frescoes showing the figures of Santa Fosca and San Cristoforo. Partly due to its particular shape, partly due to its position at the foot of Pelmo, Civetta and Cernera, this little UNESCO Heritage church is one of the best-known and most immortalized cultural destinations in the Province of Belluno. 21.
