 A chi lo vede per la prima volta appare enorme e imponente. Merito della vasta pianura che lo circonda. Con i 5895 metri è la montagna più alta del continente africano, fa quindi parte delle Seven Summits (le sette vette più alte di ogni continente). Si tratta di uno stratovulcano in quiescenza, come il nostro Vesuvio, collocato nella Tanzania nord-orientale all’interno del Kilimangiaro National Park. Un’area dichiarata Patrimonio dell’umanità dall’UNESCO nel 1987.
Gli esploratori europei iniziarono a chiamare la montagna “Kilimanjaro” intorno al 1860, affermando che questo fosse il suo nome in lingua swahili. Letteralmente il suo significato dovrebbe essere, secondo alcune interpretazioni, “piccola montagna splendente”. Secondo altre teorie il nome deriverebbe dalla lingua chagga (popolo che abita le pendici della montagna) dove il termine “Kilemakyaro” avrebbe il significato di “viaggio impossibile”.  10-set-2024

To those who see it for the first time it appears enormous and imposing. Thanks to the vast plain that surrounds it. At 5895 meters it is the highest mountain on the African continent, and is therefore part of the Seven Summits (the seven highest peaks on each continent). It is a dormant stratovolcano, like our Vesuvius, located in north-eastern Tanzania within the Kilimanjaro National Park. An area declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987. European explorers began calling the mountain “Kilimanjaro” around 1860, claiming this to be its Swahili name. Literally its meaning should be, according to some interpretations, "small shining mountain". According to other theories, the name derives from the Chagga language (people who live on the slopes of the mountain) where the term "Kilemakyaro" has the meaning of "impossible journey". Sep,10-2024
